MISSIONS OF THE NAVAL SERVICE
NAVY

The primary mission of the Navy is to be prepared to conduct prompt and sustained combat operations at sea in support of our national interests. There are other missions but the Navy's role in our national defense can best be described in terms of 2 functions.

Sea Control - Sea Control is the fundamental function of the U.S.Navy and connotes control of designated sea areas and the associated air space and underwater volume. Sea Control is a selective function which is exercised only when needed. It is achieved by the engagement and destruction of hostile aircraft, ships, and submarines at sea, or by the deference of hostile action through the threat of destruction.

Power Projection - Power Projection, an independent function, is a means of supporting land or air campaigns, using naval capabilities. Power Projection includes a broad spectrum of offensive naval operations, including strategic nuclear response by fleet ballistic missile forces, employment of carrier based aircraft, amphibious assault forces, and naval bombardment with guns and missiles of enemy targets ashore, in support of air or land campaigns.

In addition to the missions and functions which explains what the Navy does, there are a number of warfare roles in which naval forces participate. Included in these are:
1. Surface ship warfare 2. Air warfare
3. Submarine warfare
4. Amphibious warfare 5. Strike warfare 6. Mine warfare
7. Electronic warfare
